REVIEW: The Play That Goes Wrong at Newcastle Theatre Royal ★★★★★

On Tuesday night (and then again Thursday afternoon!!), I headed to see The Play That Goes Wrong at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle. As a musical lover, sometimes I'm a little bit sceptical of going to see plays, but this one came so highly recommended that I just had to!

I was fortunate enough to see quite a few members of the original cast, though some unfortunately were absent due to covid-19. The whole cast were outstanding though, including those we had standing in at the last moment! I loved the show and I laughed so much my cheeks actually hurt.

The award-winning show follows the Cornley Drama Society putting on their 'biggest show yet', a 1920s murder mystery, where everything that can physically go wrong does! Full of silly, slapstick comedy, it's just what everyone needs at the moment! It's silly, inoffensive comedy - just pure joy to watch. There's also some pre-show entertainment, with cast members coming into the auditorium asking if we've seen a missing dog and trying to sort out pieces of set on the stage that keep falling off. I was personally taped into my chair as it was "unsafe", only then to be told most of the seats in the area where unsafe. I was just glad I wasn't asked to go on stage (after pleading with Annie not to be!!!).
Everything is just so slick and amazing - they genuinely make it look like the whole show is going wrong, but obviously it's going totally right! It's choreographed to perfection and everything going wrong is so believable it's easy to forget that this isn't a well-polished show. The characters are so funny, the cast just outstanding to be able to pull it off, and obviously got a well-deserved standing ovation at the end of the show.
I would highly recommend this show to everyone. Everyone needs a bit of comedy at the minute and this is just silly but so funny.
